Imagine that your husband, or wife….a. beloved one..is now living a long distance from you. He or she has no internet connection available to them. (Ok, this might be a “stretch” of the imagination, but…bear with me.)
Now, because they cannot tell you when they will return home to you, because of contractual agreements with their company, or perhaps are on an extended assignment with the armed forces….your only form of communication is by hand-written letter. A slow process. Painfully slow, especially in these times of immediate “face time” and Skype and messaging services.
But…take it a step further.
There is a knock at the door. Suddenly, you are face to face with the one from whom you’ve been separated for so long….you run to each other, embracing, overwhelmed by the fact that you are together again.
Conversation follows, as the exultation subsides….you begin to speak about your lives while apart.
He or she asks you about the many letters written and sent to you. Were you able to understand them? Were you able to grasp the emotion, the longing to be with you…the anticipation of that coming together once again…?
And you say…”oh, I have been SO busy! There they are, in that basket on the shelf…I didn’t even get a chance to open them. You know…the kids’ sports, the housework, the job, shopping….I was just SO tired each evening that I fell asleep without reading them!”
Can you imagine the look on that face now in front of you? The disappointment? The diminished look of joy? The eyes unable to hide the overwhelming sense of betrayal that you have just shown?
And this…done to one you say you LOVE…one who you say…is alway on your mind….one who you say…you will never forsake.
After contemplating this scene; let us fast-forward to the next big event in the life of a true believer in Jesus Christ as the Son of God. As the Resurrected One.
The call has gone out. The Rapture at hand. The command to “Come up here” is heard and obeyed, as that phalanx of angels is dispatched to accompany us to our new home in the heavenly place.
You finally get to look upon His face.
And He asks you (although He already knows the answer…)
“Have you read the letters I sent to you? My love letters, the words set down by my scribes…especially for you, sent to your address…letters that told you of my eternal love for you? Those letters that I even had bound together so none would be lost….in a book…called the Bible?”
What will you answer?
Will it be…”oh, I was just SO busy. I had them on the shelf, and really meant to read them, but time just got away from me. You know how it is….”
Imagine the sorrow in His eyes….that you chose to read…say, the daily newspaper….a well written book….your email…..Facebook…..watch the news/shows on TV….but did not read the words so carefully worded and carried through the past centuries so that you would know of His love and His plan for you.
How will He feel? How will you feel?
Those busy days are forever behind you, as is the chance to sit down and open those letters; gone forever the opportunity to show Him that you cared enough to spend your time with Him, reading His Words…divine messages from the God that you said you adored.
Words are cheap when spoken by one who is providing “lip service” for the world to see…but in truth…is not motivated to reach out and even open the envelope containing those letters. To open the Book.
It is not too late. But time, as we know it…is moving quickly. Don’t place yourself in the terrible position of disappointing our Master Correspondent above. Your actions…my actions…speak louder than our earthly words can ever speak.
Grab that book of letters….from Him to you…while you still can. Open them. Revel in them. They are not just “words” after all…they are LIVING words…words of action. Meant to glorify Him, and to enhance those of us who are a part of his living body.
When He asks you about them….at His Mercy Seat….how wonderful to be able to say…”yes, my Lord…I read them. And in reading them, learned about You. They told me how to live my life for You; my life became Your Life, as you taught me how to come closer to you…” (Of course, that depends on whether you can even speak at all….given the “Company” in which you find yourself!)
Imagine the look in His eyes …will you hear Him say: “well done, faithful servant!?!”
There is a song that is popular now…..”I can only imagine”…which speaks of how we will react when face to face with our Creator.
Will we dance for Him? In exultation? Will we be on our faces…unable to even look at Him? Will we break out in song…as we adore him….as we confess that His letters…sustained us while we walked upon the earth…giving us the hope of His coming…that His scriptures were our only source of solace; of understanding; of comfort while waiting for Him to come for us? While waiting for our Blessed Hope?
This is my prayer for all of us who are in His Body.
That we use our time diligently. Allowing His love for us to permeate us, through the power of the Holy Spirit within …through the absorption of His Word…that Word; sent to us, preserved for us and written to us by His scribes, in anticipation of our opening them with joyful anticipation, barely able to await the next opportunity for reading, the next revelation…the whole time becoming more like Him..per His instruction…which He specifically sent to us by way of the Apostle Paul. In…the letters. The…Epistles.
Love letters. Coded love letters! Encrypted love letters! Understood…only by those who belong to Him…through the translation services of the Spirit’s power in us.
And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.
